Changing IP Address of DB Server

J

John

I have a Project Server 2003 installation. It is a two server setup with
Project/Sharepoint Server on one box (Windows 2003 Server) and SQL Server
2000 on its own box (Windows 2000 Server). Our organization is changing IP
addressing to a new schema and this is one of their last hitches. Will
changing the IP address of the database server break anything? Do I need to
change settings on the app server?

(I've read previous posts that talk about changing the IP of the app server
but not the DB server, so I thought I'd ask.)

Thanks
John

Hi John,

If you used the SQL servername in the installation of SQL Server and
Project Server and are using Active Directory then there shouldn't be a
problem.

Good Luck

Rolly,

My production environment is an instance that I created with EditSite. The
IP to the DB server is referenced. If I change the IP on the DB server then
change it in EditSite, will that be enough? Or is there more that I need to
be concerned about? (With this environment, do I need to worry about
Sharepoint as well?)

Thanks

You should be OK John

Is your WSS configuration and content database referenced using IP
address? If so, then you will need to make those modifications too

Good Luck

How would I check my WSS config and content database references? I assume
editsite would take care of that for me. But if you know of another
way...??

Nevermind Rolly. I just figured it out...I had a mental freeze for a
moment. I went to my central Sharepoint Admin page then changed the server
names from IP to domain name.

Thanks for all your assistance!

Rolly,

On Friday, I attempted to change the IP of the DB server. After completing
this, the Project Server would work, however, Sharepoint failed to work
correctly.

I did the following:
1. Changed the IP reference of the project server to the machine name using
editsite.
2. Changed the IP of the DB Server, Rebooted.
3. Using the Sharepoint Central Administration page, I changed the content
server and configuration server to the machine name. (Later, in my
troubleshooting, I even tried changing this to the new IP).
4. Rebooted the App Server.
5. Project Server connected to the database but Sharepoint could not find
the database (the app server is the same box).

In my troubleshooting, I discovered that the database server reference is
still linked to the old IP for the specific content database I have
(Sharepoint Central Admin>Config Virt Server Settings>Default Web
Site>Manage Content Databases). I assume this has something to do with my
error, but the system is greying out the text box for me to type in my DB
server.

There are no errors in the app log in event viewer.

What is going on here? Is there a different method I should use to change
my DB server's IP address?

Thanks.

Hi John,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner...
I just replicated your procedure on my test environment and I am getting
the same error.

Launching PWA with the SQL Server IP change is no problems. However when
I view the project list in Project Center and click on "Go to selected
project workspace" I receive the following error:

Unable to connect to database. Check database connection information and
make sure the database server is running

So I open IE and type the URL of the WSS top-level site (for example,
https://prjsvr:442) and it opens the WSS site. So the problem isn't WSS

So here's the fix (it's not pretty)

1. From PWA click on Admin --> Manage Windows SharePoint Services
2. Write down the URLs of the following:
SharePoint Central Administration URL
Create a site under this SharePoint URL
SharePoint Extranet Address
3. Then clear all URLs listed and click Save Changes.
4. You'll receive a warning message, click Yes.
5. From the Connect to SharePoint server page, re-type the URLs that you
just cleared and click Save Changes.
6. From the Connect to SharePoint server page, click Manage SharePoint
sites.
7. From the Manage SharePoint sites page, you will notice that the site
addresses for your project sites have been cleared. You will need to
manually add the site URLs. Click the Project ID number and click Edit
Site Address (make mental note of the ID number)
8. At the Edit Site Address dialog box, select Enter new SharePoint site
URL and type the project site name and click OK.
For example, if the Project ID number was 101, then the project site
name will be projectserver_101.
9. You'll receive a warning message to manually add users..., you do not
need to do this as the users should already be there. Click OK to clear
the message.
Note: You can check the user list by clicking the Project ID number and
click Go to Site Administration. At the Site Settings page, click on
Manage users. Your PWA users with the Project Server roles Site Groups
should be there.
10. Repeat Steps 7-9 until finished

Like I said, it's not pretty, but it works

Good Luck!
