Changing list sytle resets "Link level to style" for user defined

Problem: Changing list sytle resets "Link level to style" for user defined
list sytles.

I define a new list style called "MyList".
In the Modify Multilevel List dialog, I set the "Link level to style" to the
appropriate Heading styles.
I go to the List Library and change to a predefined list style.
I then go to the List Library again and change back to my user defined
"MyList" style.
In the Modify Multilevel List dialog for my "MyList" list style, I notice
that all the "Link level to style" settings for every level has been reset to
"(no style)". Hence, I have to re-enter the "Link level to style" for every
level.

Why does it reset the "Link level to style" to "(no style)".
Thanks in advance.

I can certainly reproduce what you are describing. It seems as if Word gets
confused when you apply numbering to a paragraph whose paragraph style is
included in a list style, and therefore it disconnects the paragraph style
from the list style. It's reasonable to consider this a bug.

In order to improve the situation a bit, apply an unnumbered paragraph style
before applying a (different) list style. For example, you can apply the
Normal style to text by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N.

I agree that this is probably a bug. I've noticed similar problems. MS
hasn't differentiated enough the formatting of multilevel lists (basically
manual formatting that can be cleared with ctrl+spacebar) and multilevel list
styles (which, it seems to me, should be alterable only be modifying or
updating the style).

Where does one report this to Microsoft as a bug?
The Microsoft Contact page does not have a Bug Report link.

You are saying that it ought to be impossible to change numbering without
using/changing styles? That sounds like a good idea, but given how Word
works--almost any formatting that can be applied as a style can also be
applied as direct formatting--I doubt that we will ever see something like
that...

Let's say you make the numbers in your multilevel list style red. In the
document, if you select all the numbers and press ctrl+space, the red
removed from numbers and from the list style. That shouldn't be. If I have
a paragraph style that calls for red type, pressing ctrl+space (or even
ctrl+q) doesn't change the style. Applying manual formatting to change the
color to green changes the appearance of the text but does not change the
paragraph style itself (yes there are unless-es here like auto update, but
let's exclude those 'cause I don't use it). I hope this explains what I'm
trying to say a bit better.

I see your point. That is certainly annoying!

I notice that it makes no difference if you attach numbering levels to
paragraph styles. :-(

I believe Microsoft is already aware of this, but I can mention it again
just in case.
