changing location of BCM database files

dima

Hello,

On our SBS server, I would like to change the location of the BCM database
files (MDF, LDF, BAK) to something other than the default "Application Data"
folder in "Documents and Settings". We are currently using the BCM Database
Admin Tool to create/share the database, but it is always stored in the
default location.

There has been some discussion about this in the past (specifically, about
modifying the BCM location in SQL), but I wan't able to find any concrete
solutions. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Dima:

Download SQL Management Studio for free (if it's not already on your SBS
server) and it will allow you to Detach the BCM database, you can then move
the files, and ReAttach it in its new location.

HTH,
Lon

Hi Lon,

Thanks for the reply. Where specifically does one perform the
detachment/re-attachment of the database files in SQLMS? I'm not sure if I'm
asking for something that's really obvious and can be figured out easily, but
the specifc locations/steps is exactly what I've been looking for. Let me
know either way.

Thanks!

Open SQL Management Studio, expand the Databases section in the left nav
bar, right click on your database, choose Tasks > Detach. To ReAttach,
right click on Databases and choose Attach, then browse to the location of
the MDF file on your hard drive.

HTH,
Lon

Thank you very much for this! This is a huge difference maker.

Having the location of this database under a user linked path is dangerous
and therefore undesirable. I'm considered that unless you are using the
"administrator" account during creation of the BCM database (using the tool)
any other user might leave the company at some point and so the possibility
exists that the database could be inadvertently removed along with the user
profile. That is a nightmare waiting to bite us in the rear end. As a
consultant the reliability of the solution is of very high value.

Another consideration on justifying the move is that it might be necessary
to move the database files to a hard drive with ample free space to account
for long term growth.

Later I'll create a tutorial with screeshots in my blog and give you a note
of thanks - http://duitwithsbs.wordpress.com

Thanks Dale!

I have found that unless you're the Administrator, the BCM Database Tool
doesn't work well. It might have been the servers I was on but I've done it
on enough of them that I believe that's a requirement.

I'm also not enough of a SQL guru to know about optimizations but you might
also touch on putting the SQL db on a different drive than the logs, or any
other tips that will improve performance. One of the problems I've
encountered with the people we've helped is that most BCM installations are
for small workgroups without adequate IS infrastructure or competence.
Performance is a real issue, especially using an SBS server with 2GB that's
struggling to run Exchange, SQL, and who knows what else.

Take care,
Lon
