Changing macrobutton check box from check to 'X'

I followed instructions found in the group for inserting check boxes
using MacroButtons (copied from the 'Contemporary Fax' template). And
I inserted the AutoNew & AutoOpen Macros to make them a one click
switch. However, I would like to change the box from the check mark
to an 'X'. I have been successful in changing the auto text and
things to get the 'x' in the box. However, if I click the box again
to uncheck it, nothing happens. I'm obviously doing something wrong
in the process to change the symbol, but I've been going through
things for too long and just can't figure it out. Help anyone??
I'm using Word 2003 Professional Edition, SP1. I followed the
instructions from Charles Kenyon on www.adbalance.com/word/download to
add the check boxes and tried his method for changing the check mark
to an 'x' - and it will change it to an 'x' but I can't seem to get it
to uncheck.
