Changing margins

I have a template with header and footer on all pages,
different first page. The first page header is MUCH bigger
than the rest of the document, and my text in the second
column runs into the header on the first page. The whole
point of this template is to not have to mess with
formatting stuff while I'm writing a test, so I don't want
to have to enter a line (or two or three) to get my
questions out of the header on the first page. (Not to
mention that then it never ends up in the correct place.)

Please help!

This should not be happening; I don't see how it could, really. Are your
columns ordinary newspaper-style (snaking) columns or are there text boxes
involved? How is the header created? Does it involve objects in the drawing
layer? If so, you may just need to change the wrapping on them.

The columns are what Word sets up when you tell it to make
two columns (Format->Columns->2). The header was created
by typing in the header area. I also added two lines, one
above and one below the text in the header. I changed the
wrap on the bottom line to "tight" instead of "in front of
text." That helped some, but the top line of my second
column still looks partially hidden. By what I can't tell.

I changed the paragraph formatting of my text and that
fixed the problem. Apparently, the third level of my
outline (the choices for multiple choice questions) was
changed from "Single space" to "Exactly 8". This was
messing things up. THank you for your help!

Glad you got it figured out, but I'll make one other suggestion: instead of
using drawing lines in your header (as you seem to have done), why not use
Word's Format | Borders and Shading command to add borders to the top and
bottom? In recent versions of Word, borders can have much the same
formatting as graphic lines (colors, weights, patterns, etc.).
