Changing number of recent files in *File* menu?

I am using *Microsoft Excel X for Mac* with system 10.2.

One featujre I find useful, in lieu of the old application menu that lists
open files, is using the latest files listed in the File menu.
Unfortunately, that is limited to four files. Is there a way to increase
that number? Word allows more, although I have not yet had to increase that
over whatever the default is.

It would also be helpful if I could list Excel documents in the system menu
entitled Recent Items. Is there a way to do that

You can set it in the "Preferences", "General" Tab: there's a check box to
set it, and then you can choose any number from 1 to 9.

In fact it does. But only when the workbook is opened double-clicking the
icon in the Finder. It's the same with any other applications (well, I only
tested it with Word and AppleWorks, I have to admit). I suppose it's rather
a Mac OS feature.

That works! I don't know how I missed that. Thank you.

I could not get that feature to work. Maybe it is because I do not know
which icon is involved.

Hi,

You might wish to check out the Project Gallery (File > Project Gallery).
In the left column click "Based On Recent" and down near the bottom in the
middle choose which documents to show.

Documents that were saved with the Display Preview box checked in the
Properties dialog (File > Properties) will display a preview in the Project
Gallery.
