Changing order in master shapes

Not sure whether this is a bug or I am doing something wrong.

- Draw a bunch of random rectangles with some intersection between each other
- Select them all then open the document stencil and drop them onto it to
create a master shape.
- Double click the master shape to edit it, then change the order of one of
the rectangles from back to front.
- CTRL+F4 to close master shape, then select YES to save it.
- The result is that the master shape is updated but instances are not. Why?

I tried this in Visio 2003 and Visio 2007 and got the same results.

Because instances are copies of the master shape that is in the document
stencil, not the master stencil. Of course there can be other reasons as
well (relationships broken due to editing being just one of them).

Right.
I forgot to mention in the workflow above that I am editing the master shape
in the document stencil, not in the original one.
Any change done to the master shape in the document stencil will reflect
well in the document, except changes related to changing the Z order of an
object.
It's frustrating since the only workaround I've found is to remove the
instances and reinsert them after making such change.
