Changing orientation of text in Visio 2003

Am a (very!) novice user. Have tried to customise the format text toolbar by
dragging the command onto the toolbar. Whilst the customise window is open I
can see the new commands I want on the toolbar but as soon as I close the
window (as per the described help), the icons disappear from the toolbar. If
I can find out how to get the customised toolbar to stay as I want it then
I've solved the problem I have in trying to get the text in a shape to appear
like this:
t
e
x
t
Because at the moment, if I rotate a shape, the text still runs from left to
right. Can anyone advise me please?

Hi Guys

I think the problem is the same I am having - there appears to be an issue
with Acrobat - their toolbar disables the Visio toolbar customisation. I
have tried de-installing the acrobat toolbar for Visio and deleted the
"toolbar" key in the registry (as other people have suggested) - I have the
problem in Visio 2003 - have just downloaded the Visio 2007 trial and same
issue. The problem is not just text rotation - it effects ALL customisation
of the Visio toolbar - allows you to add a new button but dissappears when
you close the customise box. I have spent over 10 hours on trying to resolve
this!!!

any/all hints/clues/assistance would be more than welcome!!!

Many thanks

Best

These are separate issues. The Text Direction button can be added to any
toolbar using the Customize dialog. However, Visio will hide the button
once you close the dialog if you do not have East Asian languages installed
on your computer. The idea is that this command is intended for vertical
text languages such as Japanese. You have to go into Windows Control Panel
Regional and Language Options to install files for East Asian languages.

The second issue deals with the loss of all toolbar customizations when you
relaunch Visio. This is typically caused by an add-on program that fails to
account for customized toolbars in their application. Adobe Acrobat has
caused problems like this in the past, but there could be others. For most
users, uninstalling Acrobat or upgrading to a more recent version of Acrobat
has solved the problem.

Hi Mark

Many thanks for the response - you are right - the problem appears to be the
text direction button only. I have installed East Asian language as advised
- but this did not fix the problem - I also tried installing files for
complex scripts and turned on "extend support for advanced text services to
all programs" - still all to no avail. I have obviously re-booted various
times after turning these options on.
I am running Windows XP home V5.1.2600 Service Pack 2, build 2600.

Any other suggestions would be really welcome!

Many thanks

For Visio 2003, look in Tools > Options > Regional Settings to turn on Asian
support.
