Changing photos to jpeg format

My pages take forever to load, even on broadband. I did some checking and,
to my surprise, they were in "PNG" format at the highest resolution. No
WONDER they took so long to load!

So... I right-clicked on each photo, and selected "Save as Picture." I then
selected "jpeg" from the drop down menu, then lowered the resolution to "web"
quality (96 dpi).

Unfortunately, the changes didn't stick. When I reopen the website in
Publisher, none of the changes I made show up. They're still in "PNG" at
high resolution.

What am I doing wrong?

Optimize your images before you insert them into your web design...png's are
bigger than jpgs.
A good and free program to do this with is IrFanview...or use your favorite
image editor to resize and optimize first.

Is there anything I can do after the fact? I have a few hundred images on
my site.

Just right click on of the pictures in your Publisher publication > and
either look for the compress pictures icon, or go to Format > Pictures and
choose the compress option. That will bring up a compress pictures dialog,
select Web under Target Output, and make sure Apply to all pictures in the
publication is checked. Now when you Publish to the Web all the images in
your publication will be resized and resample and optimized at 96 dpi.

This should also fix the PNG issue. If you don't compress your images,
Publisher will make multiple copies of your images, in various formats with
the goal of serving up the best image depending on the browser. This
includes PNG files. When you compress the images before you publish your
html, you should find no PNGs.

Yep....rip them all out. Seriously....IrFanview can batch resize, rename,
optimize hundreds of image files in a couple of seconds (assuming they're
all the same size) but still it shouldn't take all that long to do that
part. Of course, you'll have to reinsert the new images into the web design
again.

FIRST...I'd take notes on what dimensions works in the design for each
image.

It worked!

Not only do my images appear in 1/10 the time, it took only half an hour to
upload everything instead of an hour and a half.

Good news...thanks for posting back.

I got the URL of your website from another post, and in looking at the page
I noticed the big disclaimer at the bottom that one had to use IE to view
your site. You can fix the pages so that the links also work in other
browsers.

First of all, I highly recommend that you download and install FireFox if
you haven't already:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/?from=getfirefox
It is a relatively small download size and when you install it, just opt out
of making it your default browser. Then when you Publish to the Web, direct
your html output...the web files...to your hard drive where you can find
them. Then browse to where they are, right click the .htm files and open
with FF. This way you can test the pages before you upload them, and once
you get the pages to work in both IE and FF, then those pages will also open
in Opera, Safari and most other browsers.

Now, as to why your links don't work in FF. On your homepage:
http://www.victoryspeedway.net/ the links "Next Page" and "Links" links at
the bottom of the page don't work in FF. Also the extensive textual links at
the very bottom also don't work. I suspect that the reason is that you have
these "grouped" with other design elements, or even to each other. First the
"Next Page" and "Links"....look at the 'legal stuff..." paragraph above
those links try to select the text when you view this page in FF, and you
will notice that you can't, because it has been converted to an image. I
suspect that you have that paragraph....that text box "grouped" with the
"Next Page" and "Links". Ungroup them and see if that fixes the links.

As to the textual links at the bottom, is that a Publisher wizard built
navbar? It too has been converted to an image which kills the links. The
solution again is to ungroup them, but in this case if it is wizard built
you need to ungroup it from the wizard. Before you try to fix this, post
back and tell me if it is a wizard built navbar. If it isn't then you can
just ungroup it the way you did with the "Next Page" and "Links".

To explain a bit further look at your Navigation page:

Preview the page in FF. If you mouseover all the navigation buttons you will
see the links are dead. However if you mouseover the Tod Lewis Gallery or
the Rained Out links, you will see those links are still active (look in the
status bar at the bottom of the browser to see the link path as you
mouseover them). I would guess that neither the Tod Lewis Gallery or the
Rained out design elements are grouped with any other design element on the
page. I would also guess that all your other nav buttons are grouped.
Ungroup them in your Pub file, and Publish to the Web to your hard drive and
preview that page in FF again, and I would bet that will fix those links.

I didn't have time to look at each page of your site, but I expect that if
you ungroup the text boxes and other design elements that have links in them
from all other elements, you will fix the majority of the problems with your
links not working correctly in FF...and other browsers. If you find another
issue with viewing the pages in FF, post back with a link to the specific
page and the specific problem and I will help you fix it....bottom line you
can make your pages cross browser compatible with a little tweaking, and get
rid of that warning about having to use IE on the home page. And once again,
post back with an answer about the textual links at the bottom of the home
page being built by the wizard or not before you fix it by ungrouping, and
I'll explain some other considerations.
