Changing ruler display from metric to inches

When I try to change the setting of the Word ruler to
inches using the Options and General Tab, I get nowhere
because it already says inches but the ruler indicates
otherwise. (Microsoft Word/Office XP) Additionally,
trying to change it to any other measure meets with the
same failure. Have removed and reloaded the program with
no success.

It's stuck in character units. This article has one
