Changing Styles

I am trying to change the style of some text. I highlight the text. Select
a style from the pulldown and when I release the mouse the text changes but
the entry on the Format toolbar still stays on Normal. Why doesn't it set
what I just changed it to? I don't remember it working this way on a PC
but maybe there is some setting on the Mac version that is doing this?
Isn't the
Style box (first box on the left of the Format toolbar) supposed to tell you
what the style of the highlighted text is?

Hello Steve,

It should be *exactly* as you experienced in Word for the PC (I assume you
are using a recent version of Word).

What happens if you don't highlight the text? (to apply a paragraph style
you don't need to highlight text just click in the paragraph anywhere).

What happens if you apply the style via Format menu => Style?

If that doesn't give a different result and even if it does, there is
still something wrong you should probably go through the trouble-shooting
steps on this page:

http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(if you use Safari, hit the circular "Reload this page" button a few times
after the page loads)

In particular, check your updating, and repair disk permissions.

Cheers,

re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is proposed; sometimes you'll be asked for further information so that a
better answer can be provided. Good tips about getting the best out of
posting are at http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari
you may see a blank page and have to hit the circular arrow icon -- "Reload
the current page" -- a few times).

I'm not positive about this (hopefully someone else can confirm)
but it seems to me that I've seen different versions of Word
behaving slightly differently here. In some cases, it will show
the style of the TEXT and in other cases, it shows the style of
the PARAGRAPH.

I don't rely on that display you are referring to. I have set the
style width area in my preferences to 1" so I always see the
paragraph styles in the left column beside the document. If I
want to apply a style or action to the entire paragraph, I click
on the style name in the left colum so I don't have to fiddle
with making sure I selected the whole paragraph text including
the paragraph marker at the end.
