In Word 2000, when I attempt to make a change in the Word global template
Normal, the Help instructions don't. I've tried every which way, including
Tools, Templates and Add Ins, and none of the approaches works. Someone in
this forum gave me a simple solution some time ago, but I failed to save it.
Please help.

Some changes - e.g. default font and page set-up - can be made by
clicking the Default button in those dialogue windows. But if, for
example, you wanted a standard footer in all your documents, make the
changes in an otherwise blank document.

Then select File->Save As->File Type-> "Document Template (.dot)".
Call it "New" (or whatever name you like!). Make a mental note of the
path to your Templates (Tools->Options->File Locations->User Templates
- you can click "Modify" to get the full path). Typically, this will
be something along the lines of:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Then, close WORD and in Windows Explorer (or whatever File Manager you
use) navigate to this templates folder. Rename "Normal.dot" to
"Normal-old.dot" (or delete it if you are confident that you will no
longer want the old one) and then rename "New.dot" to "Normal.dot"
