changing text

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) In a previous version of excel, there was a open bar at the top that you could click on to edit the text in a cell, rather than retype the text into the cell you were working on. The text from the cell would appear and you could backspace and/or add in additional text that would then appear back in the cell. Any body know how I can get this?

What you're looking for is the Formula Bar. Select if in the View Menu.
