Changing the Product Key

I just bought a used Mac running OS X and it has a copy of Office X on
it already. I would like to replace the old Product key with my own
Product key. I tried reinstalling but it must not overwrite everthing. Is
there a file I need to seek out and change or throw away?

Delete:

/Applications/Microsoft Office X/Office/Officepid
(it's an invisible file)

and
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Settings (10)
(which contains other preferences that will be lost in the process)

You should then be able to enter the new key.

I don't see anywhere in Sherlock where I can search for a file. I'm just
using "Find" under the file menu where I can look for items with no
visability. I haven't been able to find the file you speak of.

I also do not see a Remove Office tool on the CD. I hope I'm not just
blind here.

I see from your follow-up that you found it. I'm sorry I referred to
Sherlock. Before Jaguar (OS 10.2), Sherlock was the utility that was used
for locating files.

Insert the Office X CD, then open the Value Pack. Click the Value Pack
Installer. Check "Remove Office", then click "Continue". You'll then have
the utility on your machine.

I'm new to this forum, so please forgive any faux pas on my part. My
question seems related to the one just answered. I have an older iMac
that I loaded with Office 98. I upgraded to Office 2001. Recently, I
bought a new iMac, Jaguar (yes, it rocks) and I also bought an update
version of Office to run on the new iMac. I am assuming the installer
on the new iMac will look for Office 2001 and will not find them.
Will this prevent installation & registration? (I haven't taken the
time to install it & I have these questions).

Also, how do I get all of that Entourage & IE 5.1 data into the new
iMac?

If I'm writing to the wrong "office", could you forward this message
to the appropriate party?

You'll be given the option to insert the 2001 CD, so you don't need
to install on your iMac.

For Entourage data: Copy the Office 2001 identities folder
(HD:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Office 2001 Identities) from the old
computer to the new iMac. When you launch Entourage the first time, you'll
be asked to import from another program. Choose to import all information
from an application (Entourage 2001), and you'll be prompted to locate your
identities folder. Find the folder you copied from the old computer, select
your identity, and continue. If you have already completed Entourage First
Run and didn't import, don't fret; just go to File -> Import, and do the
same thing.

From Internet Explorer: Copy the Favorites.html from the old computer to
the new computer:
Macintosh HD:System Folder:preferences:Explorer:Favorites.html

Then, place it in this location on the new computer:
Macintosh HD/Users/<Your User>/Library/Preferences/Explorer/

Choose to replace the existing file if asked. When you launch Explorer you
should see your favorites from the other computer in the Favorites menu.
