changing the width of the font drop-down menu box?

I'm trying to stuff as many icons on my Excel bars as I can, and one of the
wasted spaces is the font drop-down menu box--I could easily live with half
of its size.

Does anybody know if and where the default width could be changed, even if
it has to be done with a hex editor?

A related question: How to place additional icons on the Standard menu bar,
where half the space is being wasted as well? I see some add-ins go there,
but I don't know how they are being placed there.

Open the toolbars customize dialog (View, Toolbars, Customize) and leave it
open. You're in toolbar customize mode. Click the font name control and
then hover over its right edge. When the mouse pointer changes to a bar
with two arrows you can drag the right edge to resize this control.
Similarly you can add, remove, reposition any controls you want in this mode
via drag and drop. Get new controls from the Commands tab of the Customize
dialog.

Any changes you make are saved in a file with an XLB extension when you exit
Excel (typically in C:\Documents and Settings\<your login name>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Excel. You might back up this file in case your
customizations are ever accidentally changed.
