Changing UK date to US format

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

Why is Excel not letting me format the date as in the US format? I am trying to input March 11, 2009 as 03/11/09 but it reverses this as 11/03/09. I live in the UK but have to do reports for the US. Excel 2004 didn't have this problem.

The order of date components is determined by your OS X System Preferences -
International/Format. Quit Excel, change the prefs to U.S. then launch Excel
& try again.
