Changing underline color, and inserting an asterisk

I'm looking at two different ways of marking text as a reminder of it's importance to
me. First would be to underline it, but I'd like to know if there is a way to format
the underline...ie, change it's color or thickness. Second, I'd like to place an
asterisk to the left of the margin for a given line of text that I'd like to be reminded
of. Is there a quick and easy way to do this, to defeat the margin temporarily, is
there a Margin Release like a typewriter would have?

Cheers,

Hi John,

I use Word 2003 so I don't know if this will be helpful to you at all,
but here goes!

For the underline, once you've typed your text and underlined it, you
can highlight it and then go to Format/Font on the Main Menu. Once in
that dialogue box, you can select the underline style (thickness) and
the colour of it.

For the inserting of an asterik or other symbol outside the margin of
text, I usually insert an autoshape using the Drawing toolbar (and
resize it to very small) in front of the sentence or line. (I haven't
yet found a way to type outside the margin, unless you actually change
the margin for that particular section of the page.

Again, I'm not familiar with Word 9, but hopefully it has some similar
features you could use the same way.

Thanks Karen, both those suggestions worked really well...I don't need the asterisk
since I now have 100+ autoshapes to chose from. My Word version is Word 2000
(9.0.etc...)
