Why can't I change the update method for linked graphics? Options are grayed
out.

Linked objects (such as Excel sheets), yes, because when they update they can
use a lot of system resources. Pictures and text, no.
Originally, they simply update "all the time". Since the newest versions and
service packs, this only happens if the user allows or forces the update. The
reason is security concerns ("viruses") that the updates could trigger. See
