Chapter numbers in page number of footer don’t work

S

Sue O'Donnell

I have a document with several sections. Each section needs to be numbered
beginning with page 1, but including the chapter number so it is unique
(e.g., 1-1, 1-2, 1-3; then 2-1, 2-2, 2-3). My headings are set up to number
automatically, so Heading 1 is 1.0 Title, then Heading 2 is 1.1 Subtitle,
etc. I set up the document using the “include chapter number using Heading 1â€
feature in the footer number formatting menu. Everything worked initially.
Suddenly all my chapter numbers turned to “1†(the page numbers still run
sequentially within each chapter). I turned off the “automatically updateâ€
(don’t know how it got turned on as I had turned it off a long time ago.)
I’ve searched the questions and the various MVP documents on page numbering
to see if this issue is addressed, but can’t find anything (or else I missed
it). I removed the chapter numbers from the page numbers in the document,
shut down the document and my entire system and reopened it, reinserted the
chapter numbers, but they are all still showing as “1â€. Can anyone tell me
how to get this to work again? Thanks.

p.s. I hope this message doesn’t duplicate itself. I tried to send it but it
appeared to have been blocked, so I'm resending it. If this turns up as a
duplicate, please forgive me.

Try setting up the outline numbering again; see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

If that doesn't work, you could try copying the whole contents except for
the final paragraph mark (¶) into a new file. Then can you set up the
chapter/page numbering again?

Note that in order to show/hide paragrah marks as well as other nonprinting
marks, you can press Ctrl+Shift+8.
