Chapter numbers with numbers and letters

Randy@Fluke

I have a book that has a master document and subdocuments that are each a
chapter in the book. Each chapter has a number (Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc.).
I want to break up a chapter into subchapters and label them Chapter 5A,
Chapter 5B, etc.. I can get the A, B, C, ... to appear by using a second
sequence field next to the first sequence field ({seq chapter \r 5}{seq
subchapter \r 1 \* Alphabetic}. I can do the same in the footer for page
numbers. However, I can't figure out how to get this type of numbering to
appear in the table of contents. Like this:
Heading ...............5A-1
Heading ...............5B-5
etc.

Can this be done in Word?

I am using Word 2002.

I can't help with the specifics of numbering in Master Documents, because
like most people around here I don't use them. However, as a basic principle
page numbers in TOCs always pick up Word's "real" page numbers (the number
that would be shown by a straight {PAGE} field as opposed to anything you
construct with extra fields, calculations etc.). You can include a heading
number in the page number - see
http://www.word.mvps.org/faqs/numbering/ChapterNumber.htm - but you'd need
to rework your whole numbering and heading style approach to build something
that would give you the variations. So I think it probably can be done, but
only with some effort and ingenuity :)

You might also want to look at

Master Documents have a bad reputation, and at

for some advice on how to use them if you still want to.
