Chapter outlines

Hi all,

I had hard time figuring out how to number headings as the following

1.1
1.2

2.1
2.2
2.3

3.1
3.2
3.3

I don't want to show numbers for Heading 1 , which is a chapter title, in
the content. How can I do that?
consider that this format is for a dissertation and in the table of content
I want the chapters titles to appear, do I format chapter titles as Heading
1 or I should use another format.

Do you want the Heading 1 number to display in the document? If not,
just format it as hidden: From the Customize Outline Numbered List
dialog box, select Level 1 and then click the Font button. Check the
"Hidden" option. Click OK to return to the Customize Outline Numbered
List dialog box. Set the "Follow number with" option to "Nothing".
Click OK to confirm the settings. Then you'd get:

Heading 1 with number hidden
1.1 Heading 2
1.2 Heading 2 again
Heading 1 with number hidden
2.1 Heading 2
2.2 Heading 2 again

And the table of contents, as soon as you've updated it, will reflect
these settings.

On the other hand, if you want the numbering of Heading 1 paragraphs
to display in the document, do not format them as hidden; instead, use
one of the following two methods:

Method 1: Use a separate style for the text of chapter titles:

1 Heading 1
Chapter title here in a style called (say) Chapter Title
1.2 Heading 2

Make sure not to include the Chapter Title style as you create the
table of contents.

If you want the chapter title to display on the same line with the
number, format the paragraph mark (¶) after the Heading 1 paragraph to
be hidden.

Method 2: Use TC fields to add the text of your Heading 1 paragraphs,
and omit Heading 1 as you create the table of contents.

thank you, that helps very much, but I want heading 1 and the number to
appear in the TOC and only heading 1, as chapter title, without the number
to appear in content.
