Chapter tables of contents

I believe I can have chapter tables of contents by simply inserting them at
the start of each chapter. For example, the main TOC might contain heading
levels 1 and 2, and the chapter TOC might contain levels 2 through 4.

But is there some way to have them all regenerated at the same time, or
would I have to move to each one individually an rebuild them?

Try

1) Mark you whole document using CTRL-A
2) Press F9
3) Choose Update All in the next couple of dialogs

Did that do the trick?

Ctrl+A, F9 should get them all, but you'll get as many confirmation dialogs
as there are TOCs.

The additional prompts will still be a lot better than having to negotiate
to each one manually.

Hi Joe,

Tangential note re "negotiating to each one manually"--Word does have a
number of features designed to make it easier to navigate a long document.
Your comment makes me think you might like to learn about these. The
Document Map, for instance, would let you go from chapter heading to chapter
heading in a single click, still slightly more trouble than hitting enter
for a prompt, but not much.

I also found an excellent article by another MVP (Dawn Crosier at TechTrax)
that explained how to use "extended selection" to mark a block to be used
when building a partial table of contents. It went into very good detail
about the whole process.

It was titled: "How to Build a Partial table of Contents".

It's not automatic, but she managed to make it sound simple.
