char char bug in Word styles

B

Bernie

Hi,
Any idea why Word styles (such as Heading 3) tend to add
Char Char Char to the style name, sometimes with a
proliferation such as
Heading 3 Char Char Char
Heading 3, Heading 3 Char Char Char

Thanks
Bernie

Hi Bernie

You need to download and apply the Word 2002 service packs. And, if you haven't updated those SPs, you probably haven't got the
latest security patches, either. You can get them all at http://office.microsoft.com/home/default.aspx.

The SPs stop Word creating styles like Heading 3 Char Char Char. After you apply the service packs Word will still create, say,
Heading 3 Char, but you will rarely see it listed.

Note that once you patch Word, old documents may still have Heading 3 Char Char Char, but new documents will be prevented from
creating those extraneous styles.

It's worth understanding how these 'char' styles are created. You can replicate it quite easily. In Word 2002, create a paragraph
in, say, Body Text. Select *part* of that paragraph (a word or two) and apply a different paragraph style (say, Heading 3). Word
instantly creates Heading 3 Char. It's part-paragraph style and part-character style. This only happens if, when you applied the
style, some (but not all) of the paragraph was selected.

So be careful how you're applying the styles in your documents. Either put the cursor in a paragraph and select no text, or make
sure you've selected the whole paragraph including the paragraph mark.

Hope this helps.
