character ' (apostrophe)

hi,
can anyone help?
when trying to replace a word with ' (apostrophe), it doesn't work, as the apostrophe becomes other character.
is there anywhere i should check/change, i.e. settings, etc?

Do you mean that typing apostrophe+vowel gives you an accented character? ->
Your keyboard layout is probably set to US-International. Set it to standard
US layout (or whatever you prefer) in Control Panel.

Or are you referring to smart quotes?
