Character spacing problem

Our computers are networked but mine alone has a problem with character
spacing. This does not affect the same documents on other computers. On one
specific type of document a portion (in this case a mailing address done in 4
lines) appears as all the characters on top of each other. When I go to
font, the character scale is set at 100%. If I change that setting to 100%,
the letters appear spaced out again - not exactly the same spacing, though,
but normal looking. We have active virus scanning software installed, so we
don't believe that is an issue.

Three issues:
Why is this not affecting the documents in the other computers?
Why is affecting only a small portion of documents that are all the same?
Why is it happening and how do I correct it?
