Character Style in Table of Contents?

I would like to create a document in which the level 3 headers (TOC
level 3) are based on a character style rather than a paragraph style.
In many books, the level 3 headings are just bold face words at the
beginning of a paragraph rather than on a separate line. When I try to
define level 3 this way, using the Table of Contents Options panel, it
only allows me to select from paragraph styles. Is there any way around
this? I am using Word 2008.

Hi Bill,

There are a few ways to deal with this--and character styles is not one
of them. :) Well, so far as I know, anyhow.

Use the "TC Fields" solution explained here:
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/RunInSidehead.htm
Note: article written for WinWord--the keyboard shortcuts offered will
not be the same, so use the menu commands she gives instead. Or ask here
if specific things confuse you.

There are two other methods listed there--I am pretty sure the style
separator method will mess up your document in Word 2008, and I don't
trust the hidden paragraph mark method entirely--the long way around is
the wholly safe way around.
