characters don't show when i type

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

when i type in a cell it i cannot see it until i press enter and then it appears in the cell, what am i doing wrong?

Does the content appear in the Formula Bar as you type? If so go to Excel>
Preferences> Edit & restore the check for "Double-click allows editing
directly in the cell".
