Chart extends date range!

I have a spreadsheet, originally created on a windows machine, which seems to be behaving strangely.

On trying to create a chart(Column format) from the weekly dates 1/5/08 to 18/9/08, with some associated sales data, the date range is extended and begins on 24/7/07!

The date range can be altered on the chart... but why are these extra dates being added?

When you right- or CTRL-click the X-axis and choose Format Axis, is the
Scale pane/Minimum checkbox unchecked?

Thanks for your time in replying.

That box is checked but reads: 24.7.07 when the data start date is 1.5.08..
