Chart Preference grayed out

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I have a simple line chart. X-axis dates and Y-axis numeric values. Some of the values on the Y-axis are empty. I select the chart, go to preferences, select the chart option and the box with "Empty cells plotted as"

has the "Not plotted (leave gaps)" option grayed out.

I have been fooling around with this for hours and am totally stumped.

I solved the problem by selecting a different chart type. They seemed the same (line with no markers) but apparently they were different. Any pointer to interpret the icons would be appreciated.
