Chart wizard crashes excel

I am using office xp and recently had trouble with the
chart wizard freezing Excel. There is no specific error
message either it just freezes and then does not respond
or it says 'microsoft excel has encountered a problem and
will shut down'. Documents autorecover.

I have a similar problem in Word but cannot identify any
specific routine (such as the chart wizard above) that
causes it.

I have reinstalled office xp to no avail. I have not
uninstalled and reinstalled.
