Charts from columns of text

I can create charts from data that takes the form of numbers but can't work
out how to do bar charts when there's text, e.g. the following: Column A has
30 cells that contain either 'Patient', 'Relative' or 'MP'. I want a bar
chart that has these labels along the bottom and the number of times they
occur up the side.

Column B has the same number of cells and contains either 'Upheld', Not
upheld', 'Withdrawn' or 'Pending'. I want a bar chart that shows how many
times the column B categories occur for each category in column A. Sorry
this is so detailed. Can I do it?

Did you try a 3D column chart?

You can try a pivot table to count occurrences of the various labels. Since this
produces numbers, you can then make your chart. Here's a brief intro to Pivot Tables:
