How do you have your data arranged in the sheet?
If the data is arranged correctly you should only have to select it then
click on the type of column chart you want in the Elements Gallery. The
dates will automatically be used to label the columns (horizontal axis) &
the inch values will automatically run up the left side (vertical axis). You
shouldn't have to "add" either of them. The only thing about that process
that differs in 2008 from 2004 is that the Chart Types are presented in the
Gallery rather than through the Chart Wizard dialog.
Use the Chart Options in the Formatting Palette to label each axis: Select
the axis or Chart Title from the Titles dropdown then type the label in the
box below it. Column color & other formatting options are presented in the
Formatting Palette as well, but they only appear when the chart is selected.
You can't specify or set the width of the columns, nor could that be done in
2004. What you can do is right-click a column & use Format Data Series -
Options to reduce the Gap Width which will allow the columns to get a bit
wider. Stretch the width of the chart to increase the column width more.

Thanks for the reply. I am afraid that I can't get much out of the
Excel"help". It is not specific enough for my problem.
My column chart is of rainfall for several dates, and I want to label each
column with a date below the horizontal axis.
Also on the vertical axis, I want to add numbers for inches of rain, and add
the word "Inches" somewhere on that left side of the chart.
This all must be very basic, but I can't seem to find a clearly written
explanation of the procedures.
As I mentioned, it would be nice to widen the columns, but I can't find
anything about that in "help"
Thanks again for helping an inexperienced user.
PS. In the earlier version of MacExcel I was able to make charts like this
quite easily, but this version (12.2.2) has lost that capability.
Can you explain things a bit more clearly? I'm not really sure what you're
trying to add by way of text... Do you mean Labels for the axes?
Descriptive
text? The actual data being plotted?
As to the size of the chart you can either stretch it usng the corners of
the frame that appears when it is selected [hold the Shift key while you
drag to maintain proportion] or you may want to use the Move Chart command
to put the chart on a separate Chart Sheet.
I believe the answers to most of your questions can be found in Excel Help
if you do a search using the keyword: Chart. Explore the topics &
tutorials.

How do I add text to the x & y axis of column type charts?
I want to make the chart at least 1/2 page size, and add dates(running
vertically) at the bottom below columns and quantities (running
horizontally)
on the left hand side.
Then of course, a title at top or bottom of page.
It would be nice to be able to change the wi
