How can I create a chart that shows two sets of data over time, one in
columns, the other in a superimposed line?

Create a column chart from all the data.
Right-click on the series that you want as a line
Choose Chart Type
Select the Line chart type, and one of the subtypes
Click OK.

Create, say, a column chart with both data sets. Then, in the chart,
select the series you want to be a line and select Chart | Chart
Type... and the appropriate line + sub-type option.
