check box

Hello, I'm creating a template or document which many
people will be using to fill out some simple yes or no
questions. Is there a way to create a check box in word
2000, so they can select yes or no on the empty box? Any
ideas where to start? Also, would I be able to insert
this check box into an exsisting table? Thanks ahead.

There are several ways to create check boxes in Word. You will probably want
to avoid the check box from the Control Toolbox, which is an ActiveX control
designed for UserForms. If the entire document is a form with nothing but
check boxes and other form fields, then you'll want to create a protected
form. See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm
and especially the forms tutorials by Dian Chapman that this article links
to.

If users need to be able to edit the text in the document and use other Word
features (not possible in a protected form), then you might want to try the
kind of check box used by the fax templates that ship with Word. These are
created with a combination of MacroButton fields, two macros (CheckIt and
UncheckIt) and two AutoText entries (Checked Box and Unchecked Box). If you
want more information on this option, post back.

The easiest way to get everything you need for this option is to create a
new template based on one of the fax cover sheet templates (don't create a
document and save it as a template; create it as a template to begin with).
Delete everything from the template except the check boxes. Doing this will
ensure that you have the required MacroButton field and the macros and
AutoText entries it uses. If you want to do it another way, you can
copy/paste the MacroButton field (which is displayed as a check box) into
another document/template and use the Organizer to copy the CheckIt and
UncheckIt macros and the Checked Box and Unchecked Box AutoText entries
(which are just symbols from the Wingdings font) to Normal.dot.

The way the MacroButton field works is that it runs a macro when you
double-click it (for more, see
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/UsingMacroButton.htm). When the
unchecked box is displayed, the CheckIt macro is run. That macro substitutes
the Checked Box for the fields display text and the UncheckIt macro for the
macro, so that the next time you double-click on the field, it runs the
UncheckIt macro, which substitutes the Unchecked Box. You don't have to
understand how any of this works provided you have the field, the two
macros, and the AutoText entries saved in your template.
