OK, I'm doing something wrong here?

When I double click the check box it brings up an options window. All I want
is a checkmark in the box..............

There are two kinds of Checkboxes. The HTML Checkbox and the Forms checkbox
from the Forms toolbar.

For the first, you doubt-click and change it to Checked or not.

For the second, double-click and you can set the Default: to checked or
unchecked.

If you protect the document for forms, you can simply double-click the
second variety and it will toggle checked or unchecked.

If you do not want to protect the whole document (because you can't type in
a protected document) then surround the checkboxes with section breaks and
protect just the section that they are in.

Cheers

Thanks for all your help. The checkboxes now work.

They are grey and the actual check is not bold so they are a bit hard to see
on my screen.

Any formatting tips to make them pop a little more?

To get rid of the gray click the Form Field Shading button on the Forms
toolbar to turn the shading OFF. Unfortunately there isn't anything to be
done about the non-bold X that appears in the box [short of VBA, perhaps].

BTW - Once the form is protected, it need only be clicked _once_ to reverse
the status -- dbl-click isn't necessary:)
