Check boxes from a form turned into y's when we converted to Offic

Our office had standardized forms that had check boxes. We we upgraded from
Office 97 to Office 2003 all of the checkboxes have converted to uppercase
y's. I have no idea why or what to do to fix it. Any help would be
appreciated.
