check for updates crashes despite trying Q304498

I am running XP with office 2000. I have tried going through the Q304498 step
by step and cant get it to work .I have unloaded office 2000 and cleaned out
the register then reloaded office 2000 it still doesnt work. Can anyone give
me any ideas on what I can do next ?
