Check for Updates Kills Internet Explorer

Following a clean install of Windows 98SE plus Office 2000
Premium (along with a small amount of additional software)
on my machine, everything seemed to be working ok. Then I
installed Office 2000 SR1a from the Microsoft Office
Update web site, and that seemed to also work fine.
However, now whenever I go back to the Office Updates web
site and click any of the "Check for Updates" links,
Internet Explorer dies after popping up the "Internet
Explorer encountered a problem..." dialogue. Everything
else in IE still seems to be working ok, as far as I can
tell.

It appears that the SR1a update changed something in my
Internet Explorer configuration that now causes the Office
Update Engine to crater Internet Explorer. Any ideas/help
out there would surely be appreciated!!! Thanks in
advance.

Some additional information:

1. All Windows 98 critical updates, and almost all of the
recommended updates were applied prior to installing
Office 2000. No errors were encountered during any of the
installation process, nor when "Check for Updates" was
used prior to installing Office 2000 SR1a.
2. Running the Internet Explorer Repair Tool doesn't help.
3. Running "Repair" from Office 2000 setup doesn't help.
4. Following the steps outlined in Knowledge Base article
304498 doesn't help.
5. The failure information reported for IE after
attempting to "Check for Updates" is as follows:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName:
oleaut32.dll
ModVer: 2.40.4518.0 Offset: 0006ac21

A few more items of info:

Am running on an AMD K6-2/500 MHz system with 512MB of RAM
and 4.7GB of free space on my C: drive. So there should
be no memory or hard drive space issues.
