"Check spelling as you type" problem

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

For some reason, in a document i'm working on the automatic spell check has stopped working (ie red wavy lines under misspelt words). This works fine in new documents. I've restored an old version of the file from time machine but check spelling as i type still doesn't work. the option is checked under Word>Preferences. Any ideas anyone?!

Thanks

What language is the text set to in that document?

Spelling won't work if the language is set to one you haven't got, or if the
language is set to "No Proofing".

Cheers

language is set to english (UK). it can still detect spelling errors in the first couple of pages of the document but none after that.

I suspect the language has been set to "No Proofing" (do not Check Spelling
or Grammar) on the text in those pages.

Click in one of he paragraphs where the Spelling is not happening to check:
language is a word-level property -- each word in a sentence can be set to a
different language.

If it's not that, then we need to look further: it may be a corrupt
document.

I highlighted the paragraphs with no checking and it looks like the "Do not check spelling or grammar" was on for some reason. I unchecked it and made sure the language was still UK english and it looks like its back to normal again.

thanks for your help!

I am still pushing Microsoft for an easy way to see what language is set
where in a document.

What I want is a key you can press to reveal the language areas as different
coloured backgrounds :)
