Check spelling as you type stopped checking

Gang,
I have a document in Word (current version, 11.3) that has stopped
highlighting misspellings as I type. I checked the prefs and the
"Check spelling as you type" option is still checked.

It *is* still checking grammar as I type, just not spelling.

I ran a spellcheck the manual way (via Tools>Spelling and Grammar) and
it worked fine that way.

I really want to get my live spellcheck back. It works fine in other
docs created and opened in the same version of Word. So I know the app
itself isn't having the issue so much as this one doc.

If it makes any difference, I've been swapping this particular doc with
another person who is using Word under Windows, and his system
sometimes does funky stuff such as changing the view from Page Layout
to Online. So I wouldn't put it past the PC<->Mac exchange
contributing some funk to this document.

Can anyone suggest some things to try to resurrect the live spellcheck
in this one doc?

TIA!

You might try copying all but the last paragraph marker & pasting into a new
blank doc. Save it & see if the auto spell checker will function in the new
copy. Just out of curiosity - is Track Changes being used?

Hi Dennis:

Try Word>Preferences>Spelling and Grammar>Recheck document...

If you say "ignore" to a spelling error, Word marks it as "ignore
permanently". If you mistakenly do that for a whole document, the spelling
checker finds nothing to do in that document.

Similarly, if you mark the text as being an unavailable language, the
spelling checker will disable itself. Or if the main dictionary for the
language "becomes" unavailable...

Hope this helps

Hi Dennis,

Take a look at this article. It should hold the answer.

I found the solution here, although my problem wasn't one of the ones
explicitly defined there. For some reason, the "Hide spelling errors
in this document" preference was checked in the Spelling and Grammar
pref pane.

Deselecting it did the trick--thanks! :)
