Anyone know how I can change the character in my Form
checkboxes from an X to a checkmark?

Take a look at the way that it is done with the Fax templates that come with
Word.

The check box form field cannot be modified, but, as Doug suggests, there
are other approaches that can be used in documents that are *not* protected
forms.
