Checkboxes in Forms

I followed the online help instructions for creating checkboxes in a
form in Word 2002. The result, however, is shaded fields in checkbox
shape which cannot be filled in; the cursor cannot be made to stay
within the box in order to check it. What did I do wrong, and how
can it be fixed? TIA.
