Checkboxes in Word 2007

I have a document that was created in Word 2000 that has checkboxes. The
problem is that when you open the document in Word 2007, the checkboxes are
nonfunctional meaning you cannot place a checkmark in the box. The document
itself is not corrupt; the fields work fine on other computers running Word
2000 or Word 2003. It just doesn't work in Word 2007.

I've already made sure that the legacy options are enabled in the devleoper
tab.

Any advice will greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Is the document protected for forms?

The short way: Click the down arrow at the right end of the Quick Access Toolbar
and choose "More Commands". Set the category to All Commands, click on the Lock
item, and click the Add button. Close the dialog. Click the Lock button on the
Quick Access Toolbar to lock and unlock the form. The checkboxes operate only
when the document is locked.

The long way: Click the Protect Document button on the Developer tab (or on the
Review tab). Check the box under "Editing restrictions" and then choose "Filling
in forms" in the dropdown. Click the "Yes, start enforcing protection" button.
