Checked-out Enterprise Resources not closing

Chuck Gould

Hi,

I am working with Project Server 2007 service pack 1 and having the
following issue: I am attempting to edit resource information through the
procedure listed below.

* Start project professional 2007 with administrative access to Project
Server 2007
* Load summary resource assignments is checked as I log in
* With a blank project in Project Professional 2007 I open the Enterprise
Resource Pool
* I select the resource to edit and select OPEN
* A custom resource sheet view appears showing the fields to edit
* I make a change to the resource
* I select File | Exit
* Answer Yes to save the resources
* Project Professional refuses to close
* The status line indicates Connected and the changes were sent to the server
* the only way to close Checked Out Enterprise Resources is to use File |
Close and answer No to saving the changes
* Resources remain checked out in Project Server

If I attempt to reopen Enterprise Resources at this point, it indicates I am
currently working offline and need to connect to the server. The status line
indicates I am connected to the server at this point.

Any suggestions? At the moment I am locked out of editing my enterprise
resource pool.

Gary,

I purged the local cache as you suggested without change in behavior. The
only way I can close Checked-out Enterprise Resources is by doing a File |
Exit followed by a no.

When I do a File | Exit followed by a Yes I see in the status line

* a breif blurb about saving data to the server
* that I am connected
* an occasionally that off-line jobs are synchronized to the server

When I close Project Professional the first attempt to reopen fails with a
beep, the second attempt works fine.

When I examine the queue, no entries appear indicating I submitting
something to the server.

The test workstation is in a VM so I can rebuild/reinstall quickly if need
be, but this could be more troublesome if it occured on a physical host.

Appreciate the feedback and any other ideas you may have.

Update:

This is occurring for a second virtual workstation environment as well.

My test workstations are both XP running under VMware. One is part of the
Active Directory domain hosting the project server and the second is not.
Both exhibit the same error in that they cannot save and close Checked Out
Enterprise resources.

File and Exit closes Checked Out Enterprise resources, but does not check in
the resources.

Attempts to reopen Checked Out Enterprise resources after they have been
closed with File and Exit - no save, generates the error:

You are currently working offline; to access this functionality, you need to
connect to the server.

The only variance I can see from the standard Project Server deployment is I
created a special Resource Sheet that shows the fields to edit and placed it
in Enterprise Global where it comes up automatically when people check-out
Enterprise Resources.

My next step is to delete the custom table and view.

Gary,

I tried a physical workstation that I had not used for some time that is not
part of the Active Directory domain and it worked as it should.

The confusing part is it used to work from the VMs. Also I tried an
instance of Project Professional installed on the application server and got
the same problem.

I tried a new VM from a base XP image (external from the domain) and got the
same problem. I compared the IE configuration on the VM and the working
workstation, made some changes and still had the problem.

All VMs are running bridged networking in VMware 6.0 workstation (a recent
upgrade of the VMware did take place).

The external system is lacking some patches from Microsoft, I am in the
process of building a new VM that I will not fully patch to see if it works,
then start working through the patches if it does.

If this test fails, then I will see if it is a VMware issue by trying an
older version of VMware.

The Project Server is fairly plain-jane - default security settings, default
configuration with minor additions of views and lookup tables, Active
Directory synchronization and such.

The account I am using for testing is the default administrator account that
is only in the Administrators security group.

As I was able to get it to work externally from VMware I suspect it is not a
server configuration issue, but a workstation configuration issue.

The trick is figuring out what is different and replicating the recipe. My
current thinking is it either is related to a Microsoft patch overwriting
something, a security setting in IE in either Trusted Sites, or the Advanced
Settings, or a VMware issue.

Hmmm, could try Virtual PC to eliminate VMware as a culprit.

Thanks for suggesting the external system. The VMs had been working so well
for so long I did not think about that.

If you have other ideas I welcome any suggestions. If I find something I
will post it here if I can replicate it or the solution.

Update:

The problem does not appear to be related to a virtual machine. At present
the problem is replicated on all workstations (physical or virtual)
connecting to the server except for one - an IBM laptop that is connecting
via wireless.

All virtual machines are connecting via bridged ethernet connections. All
physical connections are connected via ethernet.

This seems to be a communications issue with the server from Project
Professional. Occasionally the status line in Project Professional will show
"Connected" and "All offline jobs synchronized to server".

Once Project Professional is closed - the first attempt to restart it
elicits a beep, the second attempt works fine.

I have built new systems from scratch without IE7 and without applying
patches and found the same problem exists in new install of XP with Service
Pack 2 and IE6 without patches applied. This is why I think it is a
communciations issue between the server and the client.

The main thing I wanted to share is that it does not seem to be a virtual
machine issue or a work station configuration issue.

Still researching.
