Checking if a .XLS file is opened

Hello.
I have an Access db that updates a xls file. The problem is that this xls
file is used by several users. Sometimes the update event fails because a
user has the file opened on his pc.

Is there any way to check if this file is opened and force the file to close?

Usually i connect remotely to the server were the file is stored and use
Computer Management ->Shared Folders ->Open Files and close the file manualy.

Thanks.

Thanks Alex.
I will try the read-only reccomended aproach since the file is updated by
night after the office is closed. Some users don't turn off their pc's so
that next morning they don't have to open the applications and files again.
I'm still trying to understand this way of thinking, but i hope i can get
there.

Thanks

Luis
