Choppy Broken Text in Word - like sentencescut in half horizontally

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

When loading files from others, I constantly see text, entire sentences, that are horizontally cut in half, or chopped at some point. Mouse clicking and selecting the section "repairs" this.

This has to be a known issue, as its happened to me for a while. I am running 12.1.3 but saw it in earlier versions of Word.

It is an issue that *was* known, and I thought it was fixed in 12.1.0 and
12.1.3.

To investigate this further, I need details of the version of Word that
created the document, and the type of formatting involved. (Yeah, I know
lines are breaking in half, but what are those lines in? How is the text
laid out? Which fonts are in use? Which styles are being used for
formatting?)

I may need to get a sample off you.
