citations and bibliographies

Heres what im trying to do:

I have put a bibliography (alphabetically arranged) at the end of my
document. I numbered the bibliography 1-70.

In the document, i refer to the bib entries out of order (ex, the first
reference is for entries 40 and 21). I used superscripts to do this.

I realized that i could use the endnotes capability of word to do this,
so that if i changed the # of one of the bib entries (added a source,
deleted a source, thus changing the numbers bc the list is
alphabetical, etc) the number would change accordingly in the text as
well.

I did a test to see if this worked, and the intext entry was not
updated. "Help" said that if i held down the control key and selected
the intext entry, there should be a menu that comes up with an 'update
field' option. i couldnt get this to happen.
does anyone have ideas for how i can solve this porblem?

thanks

sorry another thing i forgot to add, in the help menu for word, it
gives instructions that do not seem to be applicable to the program im
running. for example, to insert a cross reference, it tells me to pull
down the insert menu and choose cross reference. which is not on my
insert menu.

am i doing something wrong? or do i have teh wrong toolbar displayed or
something? i am running microsoft worrd 2004 for mac, version 11.1

Hi Sarah:

Insert>Cross Reference should indeed be on your Insert menu in Word 2004.
If it is not, see "Reset original settings for buttons, menus, commands, and
toolbars" in the Word Help.

Cheers

Hi Sarah:

I am not sure that you have inserted the entry as an Endnote.

Go to Word>Preferences>View and choose Field Shading:Always. Once you do
this, a proper Endnote will go grey, showing that it is a generated field
(which will update) as opposed to typed text (which will not).

Hope this helps
