Citations - superscripted numbers?

Carol

Using Word 2007. When using the "Insert Citation" command, is there a way to
insert a superscripted number linked to the source citation, rather than the
bracketed text? I want to use Word's Chicago-style citation generator to
create the list of references. Thanks.

No. (And you'll find that Word's "Chicago style" has little to do with
the Chicago Manual of Style.)

Thanks for the heads up. I'll just do it the old-fashioned way and use a
numbered list and insert paragraph number references instead.

Too bad that the MS Chicago style isn't accurate. I was pretty excited when
I first discovered that citation functionality existed within Word 2007...

Thanks again for your reply.

We would need more information on what exactly you want to indicate if it is
possible or not.

Are you talking about a footnote version of the style rather than one where
all items are put into a bibliography at the end? If so, you could try the
style at
http://bibword.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=20331 .
Note that it is still a beta version.

Or are you talking about a bibliography at the end but with numbers? Then
yes it is possible, but it will require XSLT knowledge to change the
existing style to support numbers instead. And how would you want your
numbers? If you want them ordered by occurence in the text, then the change
is pretty straightforward. If you want them to be ordered alphabetically at
the end, it will be rather difficult as Word does not provide such feature
directly. I found ways around it, but they require you to rewrite the style
in a specific way. As with your numbers you are already deviating from CMS,
you might be able to consider using the ISO 690 numerical style as an extra
deviation.

At http://bibword.codeplex.com you can find several other styles which
support superscripted numbers, so maybe one of them is of interest to you.
At the very least they prove that superscripted numbered citations are
possible.

Yves, I'm trying to create a numbered bibliography at the end of the
document, with linked, superscripted cross references within the document.
So it sounds like I will need to create a numbered list instead and link to
that.

Thanks for your help.

That's one way of doing it but then you will have to format the entries by
hand. If this is a one time issue, then you can probably do it. If you will
need it again in the future, you might creating a citation style yourself.

Alternatively, you can look into existing citation and bibliography styles
for Word which already support superscripted numerical references:

Hi,
I think I had the same question as Carol. I have read the discussion and I
want to know how to use the styles you mentioned in the link after
downloading them.
thanks

Read the remarks section at the bottom of those pages. There are
instructions on installation/usage.
