Clarification: Enterprise Resource Pool from AD

D

Dave Coate

Hi all,

We just set up a QA Project 2003 environment, but I we are having
difficulty getting the ERP to populate from AD. Or, I am misunderstanding
what it means to populate the ERP from AD. I have successfully gotten the
"Team Members" group to populate from an AD security group, however none of
these users appear in the Open Enterpise Resources dialog box, nor do they
appear in the Build Team dialog for a test project.

I have been able to populate the ERP manually, but it seems like it
should do it automatically. At this point I think it more likely that I am
misunderstanding something, rather than there is something wrong with our
setup.

Can someone provide me with some insight on this?

Thanks in advance,
Dave Coate, MCSE

You need to set up the AD sync information in TWO places. You found the
first place in the Active Directory section of the Groups page, but not the
second place. Do this to complete your AD sync setup:

1. Log into PWA with administrator permissions.
2. Click Admin - Server Configuration.

In the middle of the page, you will see the settings needed to populate the
Enterprise Resource Pool with resources from AD. Hope this helps.

Syncronizing security groups with AD is a different process than
syncronizing the Resource Pool.

While most users will be both a user (in a security group) and in the
resource pool, there are accounts that might be in one and not the
other. (Think Generic Resources or executives that don't have tasks
assigned.)

In Project Server 2003 go to the Admin section and then the Server
Configuration page. There you will see a place to enter a group to
syncronize into the Resource Pool.

Ah!

I knew I was misunderstanding it!

I now have partial success synchronizing to the ERP. However, about half of
the users in the group errored out. The event log error (I get 10 of them
for 10 users) is:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Microsoft Project Server Tracing Eventlog Provider
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1
Date: 11/2/2007
Time: 11:22:51 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE
Computer: ********
Description:
Component: AD Connector
File: AutoADProcess
Line: -1
Description:
AD Res Pool Sync - PDS ADD Res failed :
Wireman; Andy

That's a bit too cryptic for me. Any idea what this means

Thanks!

The ERP Sync (really an import) is pretty picky about names and
characters. Is this resources name actually have a semicolon in it in
AD? I would not be surprised if that was causing the failure. Look for
other odd characters for the other resources that are failing.

James,

I realized that the person that installed Proj Server did not apply any
service packs. I just applied SP3 and now it imports all the accounts from
the AD group to my ERP except for 3. These are accounts that match up with
accounts we added manually. I understand that you cannot "delete" an account
except with a SQL script. (right?) But there is a concept of merging an
account?

I see where you perform the merge function, but I do not see anything to
merge it with.

The problem may lie in the fact that these three accounts are in the
administrators group. Does that make sense?

Anyway, how do I "get rid of" these three resources, so that they will
import from AD properly.

Thanks,
Dave

Generally, you should not delete Resources, but you can: Under PWA ->
Admin -> Clean Up Project Server Database. On this page you can select
a resource to delete. Deleting here does leave bits of the resource in
the database, but it should work for your purposes.

Group membership should not affect the ERP sync.
