Cleared read only file, now I can't open file?

In MS Excel, I cleared a read only file following MS Help instructions. Now
I cannot open any of my Excel files. When I go back to Properties the box is
highlighted (not checked) in Green. What does this mean and how can I get
back to my Excel files?
